This is not surprising, but a recent study has shown that facial wrinkles are much more common in women than men are. This may bode well for anti-aging industry, which can use this knowledge to develop new treatments for facial wrinkles aimed specifically at women, now that known to be more prone to them.
This is what was found when it comes to women and facial wrinkles. In particular, a study recently published in the Journal Aesthetic Surgery, found that there were differences mainly in the skin around the mouth that has caused deeper wrinkles in women than in men. The study was recently presented at the annual meeting of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons, last May in Spain.
The study's lead author, Emma C Paes, MD, is the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at the University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands. She stresses that this new study could help develop new treatments and strategies "for the treatment of perioral wrinkles," the wrinkles that occur around the mouth.
Characteristics of the study:
The surface of the skin on the upper lip region was repeated for 10 male and 10 female cadavers were between 75 to 93, what is done to determine the depth and quantity of perioral wrinkles occurred in the area. In addition, fresh cadavers (15 from each man and woman) had three full thick lip resections taken and then studied at the "blind" fashion.
This is what exams and study found:
 • For women, the skin around the mouth has fewer sebaceous glands (glands that produce an oily, waxy substance called sebum that lubricates skin and hair) and sweat glands in the area, which could negatively influence the shape of the dermis (skin) filled natural.
 • The skin around the mouth also has fewer blood vessels in women and therefore has less vascularity of what happens in men, which means it could develop more creases rapidly.
 • Finally, the muscle fibers attached around the mouth and the dermis of women can cause greater tension in, that can cause deeper wrinkles that occur with men.
Although there are current treatments for this type of facial wrinkles, as part of a scheme anti-aging, the study may give traction to the development of other treatments and to make current treatments more effective. Current treatments such as injections botulism (Botox) and injectable fillers for wrinkle treatment wrinkles around the perioral region have modest results at best, these wrinkles are still difficult to treat. In addition, more invasive cosmetic surgeries like face lifts dermabrasion or not specifically target wrinkles perioral and therefore have only been a modest success in their treatment.
Dr. Paes said the study, "We believe it is important to consider the reasons why a particular treatment may or may not be effective … Sometimes you have to go back to basics instead of forward. In the end, with more basic knowledge about a problem can accelerate the process of finding the right solution. "Exciting news for antiaging world, indeed.
