How I can cure an infection of the skin on my dog leg splint?
My 1 year old Pyrennesse / clean Shepard fracture in his tibia. The vet splinted weeks 2. Because he is still chewing, biting the bottom of the roll and eat steel. I immediately brought him again, but because he got the cast wet while chewing and veterinarians had me wait one more day to get a new splint-got an infection under the splint. He became a splint and sent home with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. It's just four days later and still seeped through the splint bangage. I have begun to change as much of the gauze bandage and I have every day. How will heal if you are always covered? Should I take it two times a weeks to get it resplinted (Requires sedation-$ 100 a pop). Any advice welcomed. Thanks in advance. E now has a collar and is not chewing.
Your dog has suffered severe and traumatic injuries. This will take time and patience to heal. DO NOT let your dog lick or bite injury, which incidentally is an instinct ntaural. Do you use a muzzle or conical collar. What color is the drainage? If it is clear, light yellow or that is okay. (Clear yellow Liwu hemoglobin a substance in the blood that IADs in the formation of scabs. sometimes it doesn't leak and harden.) If the leak is any other color such as green, or has a foul odor or leg feels hot to the touch then antibiotics arent working and the infection is progressing. His would may have to be periodically debraded (extraction dead or infected tissue). You may see some kind of tissue granuloma bumpy and grainy look, this is new tissue growth. If the leg continues to resist healing you may want conisder amputation. Live a normal life and most long with three feet, do not worry about that. HTH Angie
