Proper wound care is essential for the healing of skin trauma. The market is full of various products for wound care, made with different materials and technologies. hydrocolloids dressings, as Convatec DuoDERM and others, are one such type of dressing.
hydrocolloid dressings (such as Convatec DuoDERM) contain gelling agents. Most often consists of sodium carboxymethylcellulose, a substance that absorbs the fluid and creates a bonding effect. hydrocolloid dressings may contain gelatin, which also has fluid absorption and emulsifying properties.
These substances are combined with adhesives and applied to some type of support (foam or plastic film.) This is a "patch" or dressing, which is then applied to a wound skin. The bandage becomes self-adhesive, absorbent and waterproof.
Choice of products for wound care, as Convatec DuoDERM have a number of advantages including:
* Ease of placement and removal: From hydrocolloid dressings are self-adhesive, which can be removed as easily as they apply. No ripping or stretching of the skin surrounding the wound when the dressing is removed. Adhesion is maintained for the entire duration of the use of bandages.
* Wet-tac Capacity: regular dressings can be very difficult to use in wet wounds, because they do not adhere well to wet surfaces. Crying sometimes cause regular dressing wounds to lose its grip. hydrocolloid dressings really respect both wet and dry surfaces, making them ideal for moist, weeping wounds.
* Increased Wear: hydrocolloid dressings need not be changed as often as other types of bandages. They are much more absorbent than gauze type, normally have to change at least once a day and sometimes several times a day, depending on the type of injury. Hydrocolloid dressings, however, often can be used by a maximum of three to five days at a time.
* The formation of a hermetic seal / closure: The ability of hydrocolloid dressings to form a seal is known as occlusion. This prevents water from entering the dressing room, so you can use in the shower, etc. It also prevents the escape injury outside the locker room crying. In fact, hydrocolloid dressings (such as DuoDERM) sealed so effectively they have even been used to stop the spread of highly infectious influenza virus, such as MRSA.
* Less allergenic than other wound care products: hydrocolloid dressings lead to a very low risk of causing allergic reactions / dermatitis contact. For this reason most anyone can use them, even people with sensitive skin and skin allergies.
* Less likely to dry dressings Skin: The adhesive, gauze type tend to have a drying effect on skin and in wounds that are covered. This can lead to irritation of both the wound and skin surroundings. hydrocolloid dressings, however, have a smoothing effect.
Convatec DuoDERM hydrocolloid dressings as are appropriate for moderate exudate wounds medium. (exudate refers to the substance being excreted from the wounds, usually referred to as "tears" or "discharge.") are generally not recommended for severe burns, but are given for lacerations, abrasions, cuts and punctures.
